Kintsugi practice

Gina-Marie lived in Japan from 2014 – 2023. During this time, she trained in both the traditional and modern styles of Kintsugi under a master teacher in Roppongi, Tokyo.

Kinstugi was a natural obsession and progression for Gina-Marie after her time spent recovering with and photographing her own scars as well as the scars of others (see: Survival). She is forever grateful for the trust her subjects put in her; telling her their stories and expressing their emotions about what they had been through as well as what it meant to have the marks on their bodies. With these in her mind, she approached the art of golden joinery (kintsukuroi) as a way to continue to mend and better appreciate all that has been broken.
