2022: Esthero’s artworks

In 2022, Gina-Marie collaborated with the recording artist Esthero to create two unique collages for a fundraiser. The two spoke regularly and underwent mock-up rounds and idea exchanges before settling on the final design and color palette.

These pieces focused on the issue of women’s reproductive health and the state of access to healthcare in the USA. They feature double layers of chiyogami paper cut into the shape of the female reproductive system. The bottom, darker layer is cut in a jagged way to follow the pattern silkscreened on the paper, while the top layer is cut in a smoother style to flow with that paper’s bright, pink floral pattern. They are hand-lettered with lyrics from two of Esthero’s songs, Fastlane (‘Strong as an Earthquake’) and  Gracefully (I’ll Let You Carry Me’).

This collaboration led the artist to try new paint application techniques, which she would utilize when creating the Jupiter Overtakes Saturn triptych in 2023.

Materials: wood board, gesso, chiyogami paper, washi paper, acrylic paint, ink, and gouache, marker.
